Educational Organizations: EI
Application
Suppose you asked the president of
your local university and a third grader at your neighborhood
elementary school what was the most challenging part of their
school day? The similarity of their responses might surprise
you.
The university president might say “managing faculty and
town-to-gown relationships,” and the third grader, “getting
along with the other kids.” In essence, both the president and
the third grader must rely heavily on their ability to manage
relationships –their emotional intelligence for success in their
respective academic spots.
There is increasing evidence that for elementary, secondary and
college students, emotional literacy programs have a positive
impact on learning. There is also a growing body of research
that suggests leaders in both the for-profit and nonprofit
worlds with strong levels of emotional intelligence
significantly impact their organizations’ outcomes.
Successful administrators and teachers at all levels of our
educational systems motivate, inspire, communicate, and generate
an espirit de corps, so that the structure and the dynamics of
teaching and learning can take place. A healthy dose of
emotional intelligence running throughout our educational
systems may be an invaluable and cost-effective component in
school success. |
