Health Care Systems: EI Application

Valuable ingredients in the healing power of health care are empathy, communication, and teamwork -- core ingredients of emotional intelligence. Empathy and good physician –patient communications contribute to increased patient satisfaction and adherence, and may help immunize the physician from malpractice claims, even in the face of a negative patient outcome.

One of the startling reports in health care of the last few years was the Institute of Medicine’s estimate that “as many as 98, 000 people die in any given year from medical errors that occur in hospitals.”

The Institute of Medicine suggests that important remedies for reducing this medical error are to develop strong team functioning and strong leadership throughout all levels of the health care system.

A solid dose of emotional intelligence across the health care system may increase patient satisfaction and teamwork among providers, and be an important contributor in reducing medical error and malpractice claims.
