These are the words of Carly Firona, the CEO at Hewitt-Packard in her 1999 interview for that top spot. In 1999 and 2000, Fortune Magazine named Ms. Firona the most powerful women in American business. What shines through in these comments are Ms. Firona’s self-confidence, assertiveness, and her ability to tame doubters. More recently her wisdom has been challenged and scrutinized through a merger. Nonetheless, her riveting display of her self-confidence in the pressure of a job interview earns her a score of 5.

The comments of Kansas City Chiefs football coach Dick Vermeil. His leadership talents have earned him some notable success. He led two different teams to Super Bowl berths. A feat matched by only two other coaches. Rate this comment a 5.

3. “Your professors aren’t as busy as they seem, I have caught them playing Blackjack and Poker on their computers-they have time to meet with you.”

The director of graduate program at a major university talking to new students at an orientation session. Her frustrations and annoyance with her staff sends a chilly reception to the new students, signifies poor leadership skills, and overall, not conducive to a healthy learning environment. This is a significant emotional disconnect. A low score for sure.

4. “I don’t think a woman should be in any government job whatever. I mean, I really don’t. The reason why I don’t is mainly because they are erratic. And emotional. Men are erratic and emotional too, but the point is a woman is more likely to be.”

President Richard Nixon in 1972 in his discussion with a top aide over the possibility of naming a woman to the Supreme Court. Another example of how Nixon’s fears and insecurities undermined his abilities and accomplishments. Another low score.

The comments of former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani in leading New York and the rest of the country post September 11th. Ho w he balances compassion and perseverance under the most difficult circumstance- a solid leadership moment. Rate this comment a 5.

The comments of Martha Gillihand Ph.D., Chancellor of the University of Missouri Kansas City, describing a style of leadership where multiple voices are heard in the decision making process. Dr. Gilliland assumed the chancellor post at a time with the university was under heavy fire from faculty, neighborhoods, and political groups. Her inclusive leadership style has cooled some of the anger and moved the university to achieving its redefined mission. Rate this comment a 5.
