Research done by The Fortisan Group on emotional intelligence

Our group is the principal investigator in two major studies of emotional intelligence. We want to thank the developers of the four major tests of emotional intelligence for their support and assistance. They are: Hay McBer of Boston, Multi-Health Systems of Canada, and Hogan Assessment Systems of Tulsa.

Special thanks to James Spee Ph.D., a management professor, University of Redlands in California for his expertise and help in gathering responses to the Emotional Competence Inventory. Also, want to thank the more than 400 subjects who volunteered their time to participate in these research projects

Study 1. Emotional Intelligence and Star Performers-examined the emotional intelligence of award winning small business entrepreneurs who completed two tests of emotional intelligence. The results suggest-

• Successful entrepreneurs are especially strong on the emotional competencies of assertiveness, optimism, and stress management.
• Assertiveness finding so striking, if entrepreneurs do not believe they are assertive- then they may want to build their assertiveness before starting a new business venture.
• Entrepreneurs who scored high on the self-report measures of EI, also scored high on the ability EI measure.
• For more information on this study read Emotional Intelligence Common Among Entrepreneurs.

Study 2. Comparative Study of the Four Major Measures of Emotional Intelligence

• This study was planned to determine if any relationship exist between the four major measures of emotional intelligence.
• The four measures included in this study all met specific criteria. These four

measures are: Emotional Competence Inventory-ECI, Mayer, Slavoey, Caruso
Emotional Intelligence-MSCEIT, Emotional Quotient Inventory- EQ-I, and
Hogan Personality Inventory-HPI.
• The lack of substantive research comparing measures of emotional intelligence represents a significant gap in the literature.
